Mar Mattie

Mar Mattai monastery is located atop Mount Maqlub (also known as Mount Alfaf), in the North of the Niniveh Province

It is recognized as one of the oldest Christian monasteries in existence and the oldest Syriac Orthodox monastery in the world.

Seated on the shelf of a rocky peak, this Syriac-Orthodox monastery provides a breathtaking view in two directions. From the valley, it appears to float between earth and sky, perfect for reflection. From its terrace, you get a wide 180° view of the busy world of the Niniveh people below

Alqosh

Alqosh is considered a stronghold of Chaldean Christian identity, with its population still speaking the Syriac (Neo-Aramaic) language.

The town is home to the Chaldean Catholic Eparchy of Alqosh, a diocese within the Chaldean Catholic Church.

Alqosh boasts a collection of ancient churches and monasteries, showcasing its enduring Christian tradition.

The town is revered as the birthplace of the Prophet Nahum, and his tomb is a prominent pilgrimage site for various religious groups

Rabban Hormiz Monastery

Established in the 7th century, it is one of the most ancient Christian monasteries in Iraq.

Carved out in the mountain range that lines antique Assyria and runs along the international borders of Iraq, Turkey and Iran, the monastery of Rabban Hormizd is the symbol of the unstable history of Christianity in Mesopotamia.

The monastery seems like a pearl in its case. Over the centuries, local geopolitical rivalries have often disrupted the site’s peacefulness, though essential to monastic life.
