Day 2: Jerwan, Khinnis, lalesh

The Aqueduct of Jerwan

The aqueduct is part of the larger Hydralic Canal System built by the Assyrian king Sennacherib between 703 and 690 BC to carry water to his capital Nineveh and its extensive gardens. The water is diverted from gorge, 50 km to the north close to a village named Khinnis.The aqueduct of Jerwan stands as an impressive archaeological and historical site, showcasing the ingenuity of ancient engineering. It might not be as long as the aqueducts of the Romans, but it is the oldest one in the world.

Khinnis

At Khinnis is the impressive gorge with several impressive rock reliefs and its crucial role in the Assyrian water management system.

Khinnis was constructed around 700 BC during the reign of King Sennacherib to oversee a complex canal system that supplied water to the Assyrian capital, Nineveh. The site is adorned with one of the largest rock reliefs depicting the king infornt of the gods Ashur and Ishtar, showcasing the artistic and cultural significance of the site.

Lalesh

Lalesh is a sacred valley and temple located in the mountains. It holds immense religious significance for the Yazidi people, serving as their holiest site. Every Yazidi is expected to visit Lalesh at least once in their lifetime and get baptized. The temple houses the tomb of Sheikh Adi ibn Musafir, a central figure in the Yazidi faith. The Yezidi community has faced numerous threats, including genocide by extremist ISIS, but the Yazidi community remains deeply connected to Lalesh. Even the renowned writer Agatha Christie visited Lalesh with her archaeologist husband and described it as the most peaceful place she had ever been to.

Day 3: Alqosh, Faida, Zawa mountain

Alqosh

Alqosh is considered a stronghold of Chaldean Christian identity, with It’s population still speaking the Syriac (Neo-Aramaic) language. The town is is home to the Chaldean Catholic Eparchy of Alqosh, a diocese within the Chaldean Catholic Church. Alqosh boasts a collection of ancient churches and monasteries, showcasing its enduring Christian tradition.

The town is revered as the birthplace of the Prophet Nahum, and his tomb is a prominent pilgrimage site for various religious groups. 

Faida

The recent excavation at Faida, near Duhok, uncovered thirteen remarkable Assyrian rock reliefs dating to the 8th-7th century BC. These reliefs, depicting seven major deities and the king, were initially discovered by Julian Reade in 1972 but were fully excavated only in 2012 and 2019. Despite significant threats from vandalism and local expansion, efforts are underway to conserve and protect the site, with plans to establish an archaeological park. This important discovery was recognized with the 2020 “Khaled al-Asaad” Award for archaeological excellence.

Panoramic Views

Zawa Mountain offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, including lush valleys and other mountain ranges. The vistas from the summit are particularly impressive.

Zawa Mountain

Zawa Mountain in Duhok is an amazing spot fotourists. It offers stunning views of the surrounding valleys and mountains, making it perfect for photos and nature lovers.

You can hike its various trails, which cater to different skill levels, and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful scenery.

The mountain also has cultural significance and is a part of local stories and traditions. At the base, there are great places to relax and have a picnic. 

Zawa Mountain is a fantastic destination for anyone looking to experience natural beauty and outdoor fun in Duhok.

Day 4: Amedi city, Enishke Cave

Amedi

The pearl between the high mountains, is built on a natural plateau about 1,985m above sea level. The nature and high mountains around it are breathtaking in every season. The heritage sites at Amedi reflect interreligious life throughout different periods on a small spot. See with your own eyes rock-cut reliefs on the hill of Parthian kings (247 BC–224 A.D.), large old city gate with incredible decoration of a hero slaying a monster from the Zengid Period (1085–1146 A.D.), the royal graveyard of the Bahdinan Emirate (1376–1843 A.D.), the city is famous for making the most delicious Tahini in the world. Let us take you to a traditional mill and taste it for yourself. Of all cities in the Kurdistan Region, Amedi is one of the richest in heritage monuments and legendary stories. It will be a remarkable and unforgettable visit.

Qubahan

Near Amedi are the picturesque ruins of an old Madrassa with the name Qubahan. The Qubahan Madrassa is around 500 years old and used to have a large library. The scholars were in close contact with the famous islamic Al Azhar University in Cairo.

Enishke Cave

is a notable archaeological site located in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, specifically in the Duhok Governorate. It is renowned for its rich deposits of prehistoric artifacts and its significance in understanding the early human occupation of the region. The cave houses today a traditional restaurant and is open between spring and autumn. Especially in summer it is a popular destination because of the cooling temperatures in the hot summer days. 

Day 5: Barzan, Akre

Barzan

The Barzan region has the only National Park of Iraq where wild animals and flora & fauna is protected from hunting and deforestation. This region is home of a large cave where numerous skeletons of Neandethals were found at the Shanidar Cave and investigation and excavations are ongoing. High up in the mountains is located a small old Christian village Bidyal with a large cross overseen by a unique view. The valley of Zoregvan far away from human settlements lets you escape to a fairytale-like environment. 

Dore Canyon is known for its dramatic rock formations and lush greenery. It’s a popular spot for hiking and photography, offering stunning views and a tranquil natural escape.

Akre

The city is nestled amidst stunning natural landscapes along the mountains. Its origins can be traced back to caves carved into the mountainside and ruins atop its plateau. Newroz, a vibrant ancient festival celebrated across the Middle East,holds special significance for Kurds. Marking the spring equinox, it symbolizes rebirth, hope, and resistance. Every March 20th, Kurdish youth ascend mountain peaks with flaming torches to herald the new season.

Day 6: Erbil city

Erbil

Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, is a city steeped in history and experiencing rapid growth. The heart of the city is the Erbil Citadel, one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the world. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the Citadel are several restorated houses and museums to explore.

Erbil offers several intriguing museums for tourists interested in history and culture. The Erbil Civilization Museum showcases ancient artifacts and the city’s rich historical background. The Kurdish Textile Museum highlights traditional Kurdish textiles and clothing, reflecting the region’s vibrant craft traditions. Additionally. Together, these museums offer a comprehensive view of the region’s heritage and are must-visits for anyone exploring Erbil.

Ainkawa

Ainkawa was a predominantly Christian small village, and has transformed into a thriving 

suburb of Erbil. While Ainkawa is traditionally a Chaldean Catholic stronghold, its open and welcoming nature has made it a home for various Christian denominations.

The Syriac Heritage Museum is a significant cultural institution located in the Christian neighborhood of Ainkawa,Erbil, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It serves as a vital repository for preserving and showcasing the rich heritage of the Syriac people.
